AntiTrash 2020 continues this week as we move from 1920 Germany to 2000 Taiwan. Arthur’s programing choice for this week is a movie from TWENTY years ago, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. How does Ang Lee’s wuxia movie hold up? We discuss it in our quick reviews.
Learning Wuxia with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won 4 Academy Awards and was nominated for a total of 10. The story of a young woman resisting an arranged marriage and hoping to be a warrior, the movie trumpets universal themes. It’s easy to see how audiences around the world fell for it, especially in America. Lee’s ability to marry art house and genre elevates this film to new heights making it an awe-inspiring, fun watch.
This week, we’re talking all about wuxia as a genre and its revival following Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. We also get into Freud and super egos as well as honor and cultural responsibility.
