On this episode of the GenreCast, we’re stringing our bows as we prepare to go toe-to-toe with Robin of Locksly. That’s right, none other than Kevin Costner and the 1991 mega hit Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is hitting the analysis table this week.

The Legend of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

In 1991, the only movie bigger than Robin Hood was T2: Judgment Day. This Kevin Costner juggernaut brought in hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide as Kevin Reynolds gave it the blockbuster treatment. And, with a cast featuring some notable character actors, and lead by Costner, Alan Rickman, Christian Slater, and Morgan Freeman, could you blame them? We deduce that yes, yes you could blame them for making this into a hit.

The tried and true tale doesn’t get much of a revision, except for showing us some of Robin’s time in Jerusalem, where he meets somewhat-new-to-the-fiction Azeem. After being rescued by Locksly, Azeem vows to repay the favor, and the two head back to Robin’s home. From there, it’s the story you know, the evil sheriff, merry men, Friar Tuck, bows and arrows, etc.

This week on the episode, we’re slitting this one open to discuss its approach to diversity and how well that lands, including discussions of race and religion. Then, we turn our attention to Marian and the film’s two step forward treatment of her. Also, the Sheriff’s behavior can’t be ignored. All that and much more bring us through a oversized episode of the GenreCast movie podcast!
