On Episode 356 of the GenreCast movie analysis podcast, we’re diving into Leigh Whannell’s 2018 sci-fi/horror/action piece, Upgrade. With his new movie, The Invisible Man opening on February 28, it felt appropriate to look at his previous film. Whannel made a name for himself as a co-writer of Saw, and has made a few additional films, but Upgrade felt like a true step out of James Wan’s shadow. Made on an $8 million budget and grossing only $30, it mostly went under the radar. But, it has a reputation for being fun and exciting. Does that reputation hold true? We’ll find out.
Let Me Upgrade You
This week, we’re offering our Upgrade movie analysis. We’re slicing this high-concept thriller open to see what makes it tick. Is this simple story of a man wrestling with technology and his identity an overblown revenge thriller? We’re not sure. But we do grapple with that concept, along with ideas of AI and androids, the Blumhouse model, and the frustrating “fridge” trope.
So, plug yourself in and download the latest version as we discuss Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade.
