The GenreCast’s Song of Praise marathon continues this week with Bong Joon-ho’s classic horror hit, The Host. The second of four films Bong Joon-ho and Song Kang-ho have collaborated on, The Host became an international hit for Bong.
Analyzing The Host
With a setup inspired by true events, The Host opens with a military team dumping chemicals into the Han River. Incidentally, it creates a mutation and breeds a creature that grows at an alarming rate and which makes his debut after six years of growth. The creature runs amok on the shores of the Han River, attacking Gang-du and his daughter. Gang-du and his family are soon on the hunt as they search for his missing daughter and the creature.
This week, we’re talking about class struggle and economic disparity, monster movies and subversion, and Bong’s interest in human interaction. So, join us as we sing the third verse of our Song of Praise!
