Its a bird, its a plane, NO its #FlashbackFriday! That’s right, listener, this week from the GoodTrash Vault, we are looking at the 2003 director’s cut of Daredevil.
In the week of Ben Affleck’s debut of his newest superhero persona Batman, we decide to go back to Affleck’s personal superhero origin story as an actor. This episode was originally recorded near the drop of the Netflix original series Daredevil, so its fitting we are reposting it near the release of this show’s critically lauded second season.
Arthur uses his host pick to select the director’s cut of Daredevil, which adds thirty minutes to the film’s run time, which includes lots more R-Rated violence, no Electra sex scene, and entire subplot starring Coolio.
Despite this, the gang are pretty mixed on their review on the film. In analysis, Arthur contemplates what it means to be a director -auteur in the age of era of studio intervention. Alexandra examines the shorthand language of superhero tropes, and if Daredevil is just too good at using them (to its own detriment). Dalton, in seeking to find positive things about the film, discusses how the director’s cut of Daredevil is one of the few superhero movies that examines the morality of violence as a superhero. Last but not least, Dustin uses Lacanian psychoanalysis to discuss Daredevil (and all superhero movies) as nerd fantasies. Who would have thought that a movie with a 44 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes would have so many things to say!
The gang then gives their Certified Fresh else-or-insteads, as well as discuss what has them fired up in pop culture. They also play one of Alexandra’s favorite games: totally useless superpowers.
Do you think their analysis was a bullseye or did it blindly miss the target? Let us know in the comments!
As for this current week of pop culture March 25, 2016, the gang is fired up about Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which currently has lower Rotten Totmatoes scores than Daredevil. They’re going to the talkies today to give you a Back to the Movies episode that you’ve been wanting. Keep your eyes peeled for that drop very soon.
