As the 90s were coming to a close, we got really focused on the end of the world. The cinema of the late 90s was overflowing with movies about the end of days and monumental destruction. We already talked Armageddon a couple of years ago, and this week, we’re taking a look at the other asteroid movie, Deep Impact.
Crashing into Deep Impact
A young man discovers something odd in the night sky, and an astronomer realizes it is cause for concern. A reporter thinks she has the inside scoop on a scandalous affair, but the government knows something she doesn’t. When everything finally comes to light, it might be too late. The president reveals an extinction level event, and as an asteroid aims to take out earth, humanity is left to wallow in worry and anxiety.
Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact is a more thoughtful movie than Armageddon, and we discuss our initial reactions to the film before breaking it open. We then dive into our discussion to talk about the twin movie experience, arks and messiahs, nationalism, and much more in our analysis of Deep Impact.
