Howdy, y’all! Welcome back to another edition of your favorite movie podcast, the GenreCast. This week, we’re going down stream with the 1972 survival thriller Deliverance. This taut thriller had a major impact upon release, formed the pop culture identity of mountain people that resonates to this day and has become something of a shorthand joke in the zeitgeist. If you hear banjos or “perrty mouth”, you know what we mean.
Floatin’ the River with Deliverance
Deliverance sees four city boys going out on a soon-to-be gone river. The city is developing a dam that will flood out the river and surrounding areas, so its there last chance to get back to nature. Along the way, they encounter mountain people who dwell in the nooks and crannies of the hills. Once on the river, the city boys get attacked and assaulted by two men. A tale of revenge and survival ensues as the boys try to make it off the river alive.
This week, we discuss the impact of Deliverance, both on the film industry and in pop culture. We engage with the film’s presentation and representation of the rural citizens of Georgia, and the greater south. Finally, we discuss the assault, the masculinity and the other major points of analysis as we break open Deliverance.
Uh oh, those banjos are strummin’ again. We’ll see you next week.
