We’re back to bring a conclusion to our informal 90s Action marathon with a look at Demolition Man. We’ve had a lot of fun this month tackling some hits and misses of the 90s and there was no better way to leave the decade than with Sly Stallone’s sci-fi action-comedy. So grab your Taco Bell, we’re about to get into it.
Dealing with the Demolition Man
Kicking off with a set piece typical of the time, Demolition Man pits John Spartan (Stallone) against anarchist/terrorist Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes). After a tragic accident, Spartan and Phoenix are both arrested and sentenced to behavior reconditioning through suspended animation. Fast forward 37 years, and Phoenix is brought up for parole. Phoenix manages to escape into what has become a peaceful, utopian society. To catch the maniac, officer Lanina Huxley pushes for the release of Spartan. Spartan must learn to navigate a brave new world while tracking down a maniac.
On this week’s show, we dive deep into the future as presented by Demolition Man. We think it’s got a lot of value as a movie and analytically. We talk capitalism, violence, meta-narratives and more. We also play our game: Favorite Jingles/TV Themes.
Now… How do you use those three seashells?
(Also, here are the articles from Vulture and from A.V. Club that we reference on the show.)
