This week, on the GenreCast, the gang wraps up Women’s Appreciation Month. The gang is talking the recent, lauded documentary from French New Wave voice Agnes Varda. Varda co-directs the Academy Award-nominated Faces Places (Visages Villages). Along with French artist JR, Varda explores rural life in France.
Exploring Faces Places (Visages Villages)
Faces Places (Visages Villages) follows Varda and JR around the countryside of France. JR is a visual artist specializing in murals. The two artists meet and decide to do a road show together. In bringing their art to the rural areas of France, Varda and JR examine life, history and what matters most. The back half of the film becomes introspective as Varda reflects on her early days.
We continue to expand the syllabus this week, exploring what materials would expound on the themes within the film. We then dive deep into Faces Places. Documentary form kicks things off, we then examine the structure of the film and ideology at play. Our favorite murals featured in the film also come up.
