Welcome to another edition of the movie podcast that breaks down your favorite genre fare, the GenreCast! We’re deep in the pacific northwest as we take on John J. Rambo in his first adventure, First Blood from 1982.

Drawing First Blood with John Rambo

Based on the novel of the same name, First Blood sees Green Beret and Vietnam veteran, John J. Rambo, trying to adjust to civilian life. As he traverses Washington, looking for an old friend, he encounters a small town sheriff with no time for drifters. The Sheriff attempts to escort Rambo out of town before arresting him, which leads to the police department torturing Rambo. He eventually escapes and then goes to war with the Sheriff and his men.

John Rambo and First Blood redefined masculinity in the early 80s, and so that becomes one of our main points of discussion. Topics of Vietnam, veterans, production and franchising, and police brutality also come up.

Grab your ponchos and your knives, we’re going all out for this one.
