2020 is over. And it couldn’t be more appropriate that we lose our audio file than on the last episode of the year! And, with the time of the year as it is, we didn’t have time to re-record, so, this year the Shelvies look a little different—article form!
Producer’s Note: I did try to salvage the audio, but the issues were too erratic to pull anything coherent out. I did get a new computer for Christmas, which should hopefully eliminate this issue in the future. We had a good show in store, but alas, here we are.
The Eighth-Annual Shelvie Awards 2020
At the end of every year, we look back on the year in GoodTrash and highlight movies that we watched for the show and talk about the highs and lows—we acknowledge our favorite new-to-us discoveries, reappraise movies for better or worse, spill about our favorite bad movies, lament over the outright bad, and finally, we’ll award the Platinum Shelf. These are movies that deserve to be seen.
Favorite Discovery
Our favorite discovery is awarded to a movie we watched for the first time as chosen for the show.
ARTHUR: Out of Sight
DALTON: The Foul King
DUSTIN: True Stories
Once More with Feeling
Once More with Feeling is reserved for that movie we rewatched for the show, and either gained a new appreciation or a deep disregard for it.
ARTHUR: Hausu
DALTON: Out of Sight
DUSTIN: Spirited Away
Best Show
While it seems a bit egotistical, we really hope to use this category to guide new listeners into a strong starting point if they’ve never listened to the show before. Our Best Shows usually represent what we feel was the best mix of review, analysis, and overall conversation in regards to the subject.
ARTHUR: Day of the Dead
DALTON: Jacob’s Ladder
DUSTIN: Splice
Hebrew Hammer
Named for one of the worst movies we ever watched while in our first year, the Hebrew Hammer goes to the movie that we just absolutely hated for whatever reason.
ARTHUR: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
DALTON: Swimfan
DUSTIN: Olympus Has Fallen
Best Worst Movie
The Best Worst Movie was inspired by the cult hit Troll 2 and it’s documentary counterpart Best Worst Movie. In this category, we award the movie that we found to be bad but a lot of fun nonetheless.
ARTHUR: Michael
DALTON: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
DUSTIN: The Number 23
Hall of Violence
One of our more recent awards, the Hall of Violence (inspired by Demolition Man) goes to the movie or set piece that exuded violence and action.
ARTHUR: Upgrade
DALTON: Upgrade
DUSTIN: The Mask of Zorro
Favorite Marathon
Another self congratulatory category, this one is awarded to our favorite themed marathon that we discussed.
ARTHUR: How Have We Never Covered…
DALTON: Untitled Horny Marathon (Swimfan, Splice, Michael, Red Riding Hood, The Saint)
DUSTIN: Antitrash 2020
Platinum Shelf
Finally, the crown jewel of the Shelvies is the Platinum Shelf. An award that goes to the movie we deem filled with artistic merit and demand that you see.
ARTHUR: The Truman Show
DALTON: Stalker
DUSTIN: Stalker
That is it for the 2020 Shelvie Awards! Sorry we didn’t have our traditional show for you, but we’ll be back next week. In fact, it’s January which means Antitrash is back!
