Our Growing Up in Summer marathon is winding down. We only have two more stops. This week, our film journey brings us to the aughts and places us in small town Texas. We got a bit tired of the male-centric stories we were looking at, and decided to look at a female-led, female-written and female-directed film. That’s right, we’re talking Drew Barrymore’s Whip It!
Whip It Good
In the movie Whip It, Bliss (Ellen Page) is a reluctant participant on the beauty pageant circuit. Her mother, Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden), is trying to set her up for a life of success—and hopefully a way out of Bodeen, Texas. But, Bliss is a bit of a punk, and while shopping at a head shop, she sees a flier for the local roller derby. Bliss attends the event, and finds herself pulled into a world she never expected.
In this week’s show, we give our quick reviews of Whip It, before deep diving into our game—Top 3 Non-Traditional Sports Films. We mostly just ruled out baseball, basketball and football. Afterwards, it’s time for analysis. In this week’s show, we discuss the family dynamic of the film, roller derby (as best we can) and more. As always, we give you an extended syllabus of films to watch with, or instead of, Whip It.
Oh, there’s the whistle! Time to skate!
