Laying Down Weapons with Zhang Yimou’s Hero
Zhang Yimou’s Hero debuted in 2002, but didn’t make it stateside for a couple of more years following the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
This story, which invokes Rashomon and stars Jet Li, focuses on a nameless warrior who has won favor with the King of Qin after vanquishing the assassins, Flying Snow, Broken Sword, and Long Sky.
We give our quick reviews and syllabi before taking Zhang Yimou’s Hero to the movie analysis table. We talk all about the film’s politics and ideology, wuxia films, Jet Li, Bruce Lee, Kung Fu, and much, much more as we dive into this wuxia classic.
