It’s the final week of our Song of Praise marathon. Over the last few week’s, the GenreCast has looked at some of the most prolific directors of Korea, through the lens of one man—leading man Song Kang-ho. Song has shown time and time again why he has been one of the most beloved actors working in Korea for over two decades. This week is no different as we look at the historical drama A Taxi Driver from Jang Hoon.
On the Road with A Taxi Driver
Set against the political turmoil of 1980s South Korea, A Taxi Driver is the story of two men. Mr. Kim is an independent taxi driver in Seoul, who served his country and believes the government knows best. Jurgen Hintzpeter is a journalist who has heard of the riots and dangers in Gwangju. He hires Mr. Kim to take him into the area so he can record and report on what is taking place. It’s a story that puts two men at ideological odds, as Mr. Kim must question everything he believes about government control.
We talk Oscar bait, the historical elements at play, how historical narrative can be viewed and the messages that entail, and much more as we bring the song to an end.
