I Dream of Geena comes to an end, this week. We hope you’ve enjoyed these movies as much as we have. Things go out in high-octane fashion with The Long Kiss Goodnight from director Renny Harlin.
The Long Kiss Goodnight and Good Luck
Renny Harlin’s The Long Kiss Goodnight is filled with action, intrigue, mystery and more. Shane Black’s script features all the usual touchstones of his work. And, it features one of Geena Davis’s most interesting roles to date in this marathon—which is saying a lot as she is proven to be incredibly versatile with her range. In The Long Kiss Goodnight, she plays dual roles: Sam, the mother with amnesia, and Charly, the deadly assassin laying dormant in Sam’s head. When Sam begins having memories of her former life, Charly soon surfaces and enlists a private eye, Mitch (Jackson) to aid her in recovering her former life.
On this week’s episode, we discuss the gender politics of female action leads. Arthur cites both Priscilla Page’s article over The Long Kiss Goodnight and this study on female action leads from 1960–2014. Dalton brings up discussion of Shane Black and his proclivities as a writer, which leads to a bit of discussion of auteurism. Arthur also delivers a PSA on driving safety to wrap up the show.
Now, grab your ice skates and let’s roll!
