Grappling with the Man of Tai Chi
A Man Called Keanu continues into its fourth week as the GenreCast boys talk Keanu’s directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi. Keanu recruited long time friend Tiger Chen to star opposite of him as the film’s protagonist. In the movie, Tiger is a student of Tai Chi, and begins entering and winning tournaments thanks to his mastery of the art. He is soon recruited by Donaka (Reeves) to begin competing in a more dangerous underground fight league. Tiger initially refuses, but his hand is forced.
This week, we examine Keanu as villain. Dalton and Dustin are giddy with glee as we rarely talk martial arts movies on the show. After quick reviews and a syllabus expansion, the boys break Man of Tai Chi open on the analysis table. Discussions of meta narratives, kung fu commodification and much more drive this week’s episode.
