After our True Stories episode, we kept it in the 80s and in the south with a look Kathryn Bigelow’s vampire western, Near Dark. Her second feature, and first solo directorial effort, comes a few years after The Loveless and before Point Break. It is a true midpoint as it evolves many of the themes and elements from The Loveless and refines them in preparation for Point Break. But, is it effective? This week, we turn our analysis lens on Near Dark to shed some light on what’s going on.
Shedding Light on Near Dark
A story of star-crossed lovers soon takes a supernatural turn as Caleb falls in with a group of vampires. This week, we try to lockdown Bigelow’s style, and what it means when we talk about style. Talk also turns to Bigelow’s approach to gender in her films. We also examine how the film marries the two genres of horror and western, and whether it’s effective.
