Welcome to Episode 364 of the GenreCast movie analysis podcast where we bring analysis to the movies you’ll never see in a film studies course. This week is no exception as we take a look at Pixar’s Onward, the newest film from the studio. Released just before the national lockdown amid the COVID-19 situation, Disney moved Onward to Disney+ just a few short weeks after its premier. Will this hurt its legacy? Or will the immediate access increase viewer engagement? Only time will tell.
Moving Forward with Pixar’s Onward
The newest entry in the Pixar family is a fantasy adventure heavily grounded in the world of Tabletop RPGs. Fans of Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: the Gathering, and other games will enjoy the numerous easter eggs and shout outs to the nerdiest of hobbies. In this adventure, two elven brothers must go on a quest to bring their deceased father back to life for on 24-hour cycle. What could go wrong?
This week, we’re taking a look at dead dads. We go in-depth and even compare the elements here to those present in The Kid Who Would Be King, which we discussed last winter. From there, we move into a discuss of the rise of nerd culture before ending at a discourse of Pixar’s formula. If you’ve caught up with Onward, please reach out and let us know what you thought about it.
