T.L. Barrett: A Complicated Guy
T.L. Barrett was born in New York City, and moved to Chicago very young. His father died at 16, which marked the beginning of difficult times for him. He moved to Queens to live with his uncle and faced child support related difficulties at 17. Barrett would eventually return to Chicago and become a pastor in 1966. By the 1970s, his church was home to many notable Chicago-based musicians, including Maurice White and Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Barrett recorded Like a Ship Without a Sail in 1971 with The Youth for Christ Choir, a forty-member choir ensemble comprised of children from the church. A song off of one of his following albums, Do Not Pass Me By (1976), was sampled in Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo (2016).
