16 Horsepower is good because they do not need you
Denver-based 16 Horsepower is an alternative country band that specializes in invoking themes of redemption, conflict and punishment in their music. Bandleader David Eugene Edwards touts a pedigree in folk tradition, blending bluegrass, gospel, and Appalachian folk influences. In 2005, after releasing four studio albums, 16 Horsepower broke up, citing “political and spiritual differences”.
16 Horsepower’s first LP, Sackloth ‘n Ashes, features Edwards along with Jean-Yves Tola and Kevin Soll. The album could be a sonic sibling to McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, evoking a bleak, western landscape that is the farthest place from hope. However Edwards inserts tales of redemption and grace into this landscape almost in spite of it; a powerful statement about hoping while despairing.
