We keep the Asian-cinema going this week with a look at a film distributed by wunderkind studio, A24. In recent years, A24 has become the new Miramax, boasting a near flawless record of critically-acclaimed indie darings. They made kicked off with a bang, dropping the cult hit Spring Breakers. But has their success and praise always been deserving? We go back to 2014, the second year of A24, and look at the 15th movie they distributed in that short time span, Revenge of the Green Dragons.

Revenge of the Green Dragons is a crime film set in the 1980s and based on true events. The film, co-directed by Andrew Lao (Infernal Affairs) and Andrew Loo is a gritty crime story following two young men. Sonny (Justin Chon) and Steven (Kevin Wu) are illegally trafficked to the states to pursue the American Dream. When they hit their teenage years, they are forced to join a gang known as the Green Dragons. The film tells their story as they grow up trying survive this lifestyle.

Does the film measure up to the standards we’ve set for A24 just four short years later? You’ll have to tune in to find out. We talk about A24, the way the film treats women, the crime narrative and politics and more in this week’s show. We also play our game.
