Happy new year and welcome to 2019 with the GoodTrash GenreCast! And with the new year comes the new AntiTrash Marathon. And this year, we’re going west for the 6th annual iteration of this marathon. To kick things off, we’re offering our Stagecoach movie analysis. That’s right, it’s the birth of THE DUKE and the elevation of a genre.
Stagecoach Movie Analysis
Set in 1880, Stagecoach follows a group of travelers heading from the Arizona territory to New Mexico. Along the way they encounter the wanted Ringo Kid (John Wayne) and must stay alert of the ever-looming threat of Geronimo. Part chamber piece and part high-octane action, Stagecoach gave birth to the John Wayne figure who would become an American Icon.
In this week’s show, we open up the analysis floodgate by talking genre and westerns. From there, we move into archetypes and then race. We wrap things up with a look at the masculinity and femininity and Wayne’s role in shaping manhood for a generation. But before all of that, we play a game: Favorite Genre Watershed Films.
The wagon is hitched, we’ve gotta go! See you next time!
