Welcome back to the GenreCast movie analysis podcast! We’ve got the multiverse situation squared away, and the boys are back in town to talk Super Mario Bros from 1993. By the way, we hope you enjoyed last week’s show.
Down the Pipe with Super Mario Bros.
Film fans often discuss the 1993 Super Mario Bros adaptation as one of the worst films of all time. The Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo-led fantasy adventure is a loose adaptation of the popular video game series. The movie delves into alternate universes, a germaphobic Koopa, prodigal princesses and much more. It’s really a lot.
But, the boys react differently than you might expect. In fact, all three hosts go to bat for Super Mario Bros. This week, as they break it down, the gang discuss Daisy’s role, the film’s politics, form and function, and the issues inherent in adapting a video game for cinema. As always, the boys do their best to expand your syllabus and ultimately decide if this movie should go on the shelf or in the trash.
Now, grab your plunger and your mushrooms, we’re going in.
