It’s time to celebrate the new year and dive into awards season! That’s right, it’s time for our annual AntiTrash marathon. With the year being 2020, Arthur has developed a conceptual marathon that always factors in the number 20. To kick it all off, he’s programmed a movie from 1920, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
Inside The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The primary example of German Expressionism in film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a iconic piece in the horror genre. Following the exploits of a suspicious sideshow act, Dr. Caligari, the film is a tale of murder and chaos in a carnival-esque world.
This week, we’re diving into silent film, which Dalton has never experienced. Dustin evokes the Kracauer/Elsaesser debate of authorial intent and cultural reading. We also discuss the narrative twist and whether it works or not.
So, join us, as we kick off a new year, a new marathon, and a new experience. And tune in next week to see what movie from TWENTY years ago, Arthur has programmed.
