In 2003, the world was riding high from the resurgence of comic book-based movies—and everything was getting optioned, including the multiple works of Alan Moore. And, with a premise that promises to pit literature’s biggest heroes together, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen couldn’t fail.

But it did.

Joining The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Allan Quartermain (Connery) is pursued and invited to join a secret society of heroes devoted to fighting crime. Quartermain joins the likes of Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Dorian Grey, Henry Jekyll, and Tom Sawyer in an attempt to capture the terrorist known as The Phantom. With Stephen Norrington (Blade) at the helm and Sean Connery in the lead, the movie seemed to have the pieces in place for success. But, troubled production and movement from the source material became the root for a number of issues within the movie.

This week, we’re taking a look beneath the surface as we examine British patriotism, post-9/11 cinema, Mina Harker, what could have been, and much more on Episode 369 of The GenreCast of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
