The Quick and the Dead (1995) Analysis — GTGC #305

Welcome back, partners. The GoodTrash GenreCast is back with more wild west fun. On this week’s show, we’re talking shoot ’em ups galore as we discuss Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead.

Judging The Quick and the Dead

Sam Raimi directs the over-the-top 1995 western. Sharon Stone plays Ellen (or The Lady), who rolls into Redemption looking to avenge a great loss in her life. While there, she finds herself in a quick-draw tournament where the stakes quickly raise to life or death. Joined by an ensemble of incredible players, including Russel Crowe, Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio and more, Stone takes center stage. The film is partly serious and mostly a parody of many of the western tropes, including those made famous by Leone’s Dollars Trilogy.

This week, we look at what each major archetype represents, and by the end we connect the dots back to a larger, more prescient meta reading. But before that takes place, we switch things up in our game presentation as we Recast The Quick and the Dead.

Now, get to the streets, when the hour strikes, it’ll be time to hit play.
