With our Growing Up in Summer marathon behind us, we decide to move on to bigger and brighter things… Or, something like that. If nothing else, we giggle. A lot. Because, we return to our regularly schedule program with what many have called the worst movie of 2017, The Snowman.
Do You Wanna Watch The Snowman?
The answer is probably no. And, to be honest, that’s fair. Based on the best-selling novel by Jo Nesbø, The Snowman is a cold, Norwegian-noir with a troubled protagonist. Legendary detective Harry Hole (Fassbender) is an alcoholic struggling to make it through the days. He wakes up on park benches and sleeps in entryways. As his personal life continues to unravel, he begins to receive mysterious messages from an unidentified criminal. Soon, women begin dying and the only clues are the sinister snowmen at the scenes of the crimes.
HIS. NAME. IS. HARRY. HOLE.
And that’s where this entire episode unravels. We offer our The Snowman reviews, and you might have an idea how that goes. We also play a game—Pitch Your Own Fassbender Mystery. After all of that, we bring some analysis to the film. We talk genre versus generic. What separates a good genre film from a bad one. We also look at the tropes of the murder mystery.
