Welcome to a special edition of the GoodTrash GenreCast. On this week’s show, we have a patreon-sponsored movie. Our patreon supporter, Keithan, got to set the programming for this week, and he stayed mostly true to his roots with this pick. He sets us up with the kinetic, high-energy Fallen Angels from director Wong Kar-Wai. Fallen Angels is a dreamlike piece that is more experience than story, so is it worth your time? Tune in and find out.
Wong Kar-Wai’s Fallen Angels
Fallen Angels is a mash-up of two stories that intersect at times. Known as a spiritual successor to his earlier film Chungking Express, Fallen Angels holds on to the episodic feel and explores themes of longing, love and maturity. Wong Kar-Wai boldly examines and pieces together an in-your-face piece that reads more like poetry than narrative. Honestly, it’s a bit hard to describe the little plot that is here—but note, this film is never about the narrative.
In our discussion and review of Fallen Angels, we look at the film’s themes of longing, family, globalization and more. We break down the aesthetic and style and how those tools portray the films messaging. We kick everything off though with a very special surprise from Dustin and Keithan. You can jump to about the fifteen-minute mark if you really want to get into the show proper.
Oh, and we play a game—Top 3 Director Blindspots.
Now, saddle up next to someone and let the good times roll.
