Grab your guns and grab your pals, and also, check the back seat. This week, we flashback to the time we watched Zombieland. It was a part of our double header Shocktober in 2014. In fact, this was Alex’s host pick for the second part of that marathon, and surprisingly it garnered a pretty “it’s okay” reaction at the table. But, despite that we pushed through and found the magical Twinkie of Analysis hiding deep inside.
We Journey to Zombieland
For newer listeners, things may feel unfamiliar as the earlier format of the show was a bit different. We start with our synopsis and reviews as always, and then move straight to analysis. Dalton kicks things off and speaks to the idea of bringing order out of chaos. He references Maria Montessori who talked about human tendencies toward order. Arthur contrasts international Zombie Romantic Comedies or ZomRomComs. He looks at the cultural differences between Shaun of the Dead, Tokyo Zombie, and Zombieland.
Alex decides to build off of ideas of personhood and consumerism. She uses this as a starting point as it is prevalent throughout zombie narratives. Dustin picks up on some of the ideas that Alex brought up, specifically he wants to talk about desire. He finds that consumption doesn’t end with the zombies and that the humans are also great at mass consumption. He brings up Larry May and Richard DeCordova who spoke about screen presentations and the sorts of things that Hollywood sold to audiences.
Following the analysis, the game begins. The game on this episode was our Favorite Movie Cameos. And then, we wrap up this week as we do every week with what has us Fired Up in Pop Culture. Well, much of the western world has been destroyed by zombies. So, wanna catch a ride with us to Zombieland?
